Alabama Power Academic Excellence Program (AEP)
The primary objective of the Alabama Power Academic Excellence Program is to increase recruitment and enhance retention of under-represented engineering students at Auburn University.
This mission is accomplished through a series of academically based programs and activities. All under-represented minorities are encouraged to participate in the programs. The retention programs especially target first year minority students because transitioning from high school to college presents some unique adjustment problems. Adjusting to a new environment and new culture can impact academic performance. Summer Engineering Enrichment Program is a comprehensive three-week residential program for highly motivated minority students who want a head start in their engineering career. The Engineering Enrichment Program takes place on the main campus of Auburn University, emphasizing academic preparedness, development and enhancement of study strategies, establishment of social support networks, and exposure to valuable campus resources. The program is staffed by engineering faculty, counselors, graduate teaching assistants, and upper level engineering students. |
AEOP (GEMS) Near-Peer Mentor
Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP) mission is to provide both students and teachers a collaborative, cohesive, portfolio of Army-sponsored STEM programs that effectively engage, inspire, and attract the next generation of STEM talent through K through college programs and expose them to DoD STEM careers.
The USAARL Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program is an extracurricular, STEM education program that enables students to engage in hands-on experiments, which are age- and grade-appropriate, and to focus on STEM career fields. The program is organized such that college-age students, called near-peer mentors, lead the GEMS modules and serve as role models to the students by promoting science and math concepts and by acting as expert resources concerning college life and career pathways. The mentors, who are close in age to the GEMS students, create a relaxed atmosphere ideal for learning. The program is strengthened by a resource teacher who is knowledgeable in STEM education and who trains the mentors and oversees the day-to-day operation of GEMS. Near-Peer Mentors (NPM) help to develop, explain, and execute each teaching module in the GEMS Program. NPM are college students from all STEM fields and education-related majors. These mentors are closer in age than the traditional teacher and create a more relaxed atmosphere for learning. The responsibilities of a NPM are to be role models to the students, promote interest in high-level science and math classes, and act as expert resources concerning college life and career pathways. NPMs are selected for their technical experience, attitude and teaching skills. Their inclusion in the GEMS program is integral to enhancing each and every GEMS participant’s learning and achievement. |
